Early Training
Alice walked through the doors of San Francisco's first School of Oyama dojo around 1964 and joined the first karate class taught there. She began training after being threatened by men in her neighborhood and wanting to learn self-defense.
She studied under Donald Buck and Birney Jarvis, rose rapidly in rank, and was eventually awarded Nidan by Sensei Buck.
Service to the Dojo
Alice stayed with Sensei Buck as an assistant until his death. She helped wherever needed, from dinners and phone calls to kata and technique.
Students remembered her direct corrections. Whether she was helping with technique or judging a performance, her reaction was enough for students to know when they needed to do better.
Recognition
Alice later accepted her 4th Dan after 45 years of training and service. Her long work for Kyokushinkai and the School of the Tiger is remembered with appreciation.
