Titles Used by Organization Ranks

The American Kyokushin Karate Organization titles are special honors, not automatically assigned with rank or seniority. They are reserved for those who have demonstrated major martial arts achievements and made significant contributions to the martial arts community.

Senpai

Used to address senior students by those of lesser experience in the school.

Sensei

Used to refer to or address teachers. It shows respect for someone who has achieved a recognized level of mastery in an art.

Shihan

A title for expert or senior instructors.

Kyoshi

Refers to a senior advanced teacher.

Hanshi

Refers to a senior expert considered a "teacher of teachers." This title is reserved for the top few instructors in the organization.
